Portland Oregon: Costume Time

We love spending the Christmas holidays in Portland.  The city is festive and at its most charming during the holiday season.  Once evening Kayla and I ran into a crowd of perhaps 100 Santas making their way from one Pearl District bar to another, sampling holiday spirits.

It seems that holiday costume parties are a local tradition and many stores put out the most outrageous cloths and masks for costumes.  So naturally we just had to check out the Goodwill store near our hotel to see what was on offer. And we found that some holiday "spirits" were awaiting us.

Pretty colorful, but who would wear it?

A couple of locals had their own notions about how to celebrate the holiday.

After the whimsy, we headed off into the city for another day of exploration.

PATIO DRESS PANACHE

I love it when Luminous Lady Vintage customers send me photos of themselves in a dress they've purchased and then made their own with great accessories and style. Here is Biddy looking glorious, wearing a vintage 50's pink patio dress in the "Mexican play-dress influenced style" of the 40's & 50's. She is at the Maverick Festival in England.

We continued our journey through vintage Portland with a visit to another great vintage shop on the east side of Portland: Xtabay.

The shop has a unique style, and all its displays are very elegant.

Gold and white tones abound and cloths and accessories are displayed elegantly.

As is so typically the case in Portland sales staff are knowledgeable and helpful.

After a lovely day of shopping we stepped out of Xtabay into one of Portland's more charming neighborhoods in search of dinner.  No problem ....... so many good restaurants in the neighborhood.

If there is a vintage clothing capitol in this world of ours, I will guess it is Portland, Oregon. What can you say about a city that prides itself on off-beat style.

Weird or not, Portlandians love and wear vintage, and cool vintage shops are scattered around the city. I thought I'd share a series of posts about vintage shops we visited on a recent winter excursion to Portland.

Simply Vintage * BOUTIQUE

Simply Vintage is also one of my favorite stores on etsy, (so what's a little competition, we can spread the love ;-) along with Fab Gabs, both located  in vintage central on planet Earth in Portlandia!
Sarah, who works here (not Sarah the owner) being charming in her 'oh so very cute' sweater & celluloid brooch
Treasures galore! I bought a fabulous green art glass bead 50's necklace, so yum yum!
Learning from Sarah that they do all the fashion shoots for etsy here in the store, so it does triple duty as a storefront, storage and photo & listing studio. Very practical, rather than just renting storage space here in the city, where space is money. This is a dream of mine, but there really isn't a market for high end vintage in La Grande, we are too far off the beaten vintage path. Boo hoo.

I'm always drawn to the boudoir section, it's just so girly all that satin and lace. I have so much lingerie already that I've purchased over the last 5 years to list on my 'romantic vintage' etsy store luminousladyvintage, that I could open a third store on etsy.

Well worth a stop to shop!

Sometimes we take Red Red Robin, our retro trailer, out on our vintage treasure quests. The month of May found us at a campground in Utah.

Down the road we found a great antique store in the town of Brigham City.

The store had pretty much everything you might want. Care for an antique commode?

Or a Victorian stereoscope?

Perhaps a hot antique racing car is more to your taste?

The Porche was certainly my idea of pastry, and I gave some thought to draining our savings account to buy it at the bargain price of only $18,000. But it would not fit in the back of our car, so no sale.

Unfortunately no cloths either, so we headed back to Red Red Robin to rest our tired feet, and have a bit of a snack.

I guess Kayla was more tired than I thought, because she doesn't usually feed popcorn to the floor.

From Perry we pressed on into south central Utah, headed for Moab, when oooops .... problems with Red Red Robin's tires, and we pulled off in the tiny town of Helper. While I fiddled with the tires, Kayla ran across the street to an antique store where she discovered the most amazing cloths from the 1930s and 1940s.

Just as she was settling in to a major buying adventure I ran in and began to drag her out. "If we don't get 10 miles down the road to Price in the next 45 minutes we are going to have a flat tire here in the middle of the Utah high desert. We have to leave now to get to the tire store before it closes." I did not even have my camera at hand because this was so serious. I could see what was on Kayla's mind: "Oh no, shopping vs flat tire!!!"  A difficult choice for her, but not for me. She was barely started into some serious collecting when we shoved off. Sigh, sigh.  Well leaving such a treasure trove is better than being stranded on the side of the highway with a flat tire.  Well, Kayla thoutht "Maybe it is."

Well that is vintage treasure questing some times. X marks the spot, you start to dig and the fates blow you away.  To return?

Sometimes the quest for vintage treasure strikes gold in one's very neighborhood.  We live in a valley in eastern Oregon which has several small towns around its rim.  Driving over to the town of Union we paid a visit to the Union County Museum during the Pioneer Days festival.

To our surprise, we discovered that the museum had a fabulous collection of vintage clothing which typically was not on display, as the displays tended to focus more on antique and pioneer (19th century) clothing and utensils. However, there had been some flooding in a storage area and to dry out the clothing the museum had moved the vintage collection across the street to a 19th century church they were renovating.

Blanche, one of the hostesses at the museum, offered to give us a look. What a collection it was. And because the items in the collection were not behind display cases it was so much fun to get to touch many vintage fabrics I had only read about.

After browsing through the vintage collection in the church we returned to the museum to look at the few vintage items displayed and their vast pioneer and Victorian collection, which was wonderfully displayed.  In some cases women's cloths were displayed in rooms with antique furniture.

Sometimes the clothing and accessories were displayed in cases.

Other times the items were sitting out for close inspection, as were these fabulous hats. Using the light in my cell phone I could examine the lining and construction of these hats and pioneer bonnets.

The collection of purses was also fabulous, but safely behind glass.

A highlight of the collection for me was the display of Victorian wedding dresses, with photographs of the brides who had worn them. Since it was a local museum, it had been gifted with both the dresses and the photographs by descendants of the brides who wanted to share their history with the community and visitors to the museum.

The lace in these dresses was spectacular, and several cases were devoted to other examples of this fine lace work.

Lace is something I know only a little about, so I was delighted to learn that in a future visit I would be able to meet with the curator of these exhibits, who would be glad to help me learn more about lacework.
